| I'k kind of considering Drug and Alcohol Recovery counsler, but one of the form requirements are SPEECH. I can't do speeches. And don't say, "Oh yesh you tin can, behbeh" I honestly tin can't. I know exactly how you feel b/c I am the same. I'm the kind that got upward and stammered thru, extremely red-faced the entire time. Information technology was horrible and though no ane made fun of me, they looked enough embarrassed for me, which was worse. I was always interested in education, but I didn't even think I could get up in front end of get-go graders! Fortunately in my life, I take learned some tricks forth the way and while I'll never speak like a politician, I did have people raving about the concluding one I fabricated and they still talk most it over a year later, so I must have done something correct. I eased into it very gradually. Very, very gradually. We needed someone to say a devotion at church one solar day and I didn't want to but I checked with someone and asked if I could read it. They weren't being choosy and our church was small anyway, so I brought in a reading that would take about 20 minutes and was broken up into parts and so information technology was easy to follow. I wrote a couple of comments to add together to it and thought I might throw those in w/o reading but it was non to be--my eyes were glued to the page. It went well enough b/c i have good reading aloud skills. Next fourth dimension I threw in a personal story that I've told many times. And and so on and and then on. Petty steps. At the loftier school I piece of work at, the speech instructor makes the starting time one of the semester what she calls a "gripe spoken communication." They take to get upward and talk for three-five minutes about something people practise that drives them crazy. Pure genius. Who can't talk nearly that? And then, advice for the absolutely terrified: 1. The biggest reason I flubbed in the first place is b/c I went breezing in in that location the day I was to give a spoken communication and I had not prepared--oh sometime around Jr. high in the days I never did homework--I'd made a few notes simply that was it. Biggest bomb in history--you have to be totally prepared if y'all're not a proficient extemp speaker. Do is really important at first also. 2. Run into how much reading you can get away with doing. Detect more studies to put in your speech and throw in lots of quotes. You lot won't have to do this forever but it's a crutch to go you thru the first ones. Talk to your instructor and tell him/her your fears--most teachers will work with you and will appreciate your honesty. Maybe the teacher will be kind enough to assist y'all practice or will send you to a TA to help you if you don't have a friend in the class. 3. Throw in those personal stories--utilise ones you've told lots of times b/c they will flow much more than naturally. four. Find that pair of sympathetic eyes--the one who is rooting for y'all. Keep coming back to that person, just be sure to sweep the room with your gaze also--no one needs to know that you're only focusing on their nose. 5. Put your middle into it--when yous do that, your ego gets out and information technology's your ego that's holding you dorsum. Your heart wants to be heard. | Like definitely Public speaking/presentations were a hallmark of my university - nearly classes had some exposure to it ....... if kids with barely passable TOEFL scores tin can go upwards there in front of the room and present information intelligently so and then can you Also, how are you going to be able to speak to addicts and attain them when you can't get over a fearfulness of public speaking ....... makes absolutley no sense ... not but is it a skill that volition be incredibly helpful given what y'all want to do, there is something nearly trying to guide people of crippling addictions and then maxim you'd "dice" if you had to take a speech course ......... some of those people volition feel similar they're going to dice if they don't have some more than heroin, some will die if they do and some will die even if they exercise not, but i'k sure you're little trouble with public voice communication and all is right up there Take the course - it volition be salubrious ..... you'll discover out the reasoning why yous don't like it (personally I had speech bug as a kid so I never really felt comfortable talking in front end of people - not an issue anymore, although it's non something I beloved to do and I definitely tend to be more on the shy side of things) ........ you'll learn tips, techniques, etc that will assist you through information technology .... you'll run across your classmates struggle, progress, etc .... yous'll see the same from yourself Besides wait to meet if there is a local toastmasters social club - they tin help with public speaking It's really an of import skill and a challenge that should be embraced - non ran abroad from in the manner of a 12 year former |

| A class on Speech may not be what y'all think it is. I think one I took, a lot was well-nigh getting to feel at ease while you were speaking. Not making speechs, only just speaking on certain subjects. Since y'all programme on existence a counsler, I think you volition find the class very helpful. You may detest it with a passion, but information technology's something y'all demand. Y'all as well demand to be able to speak without resorting to, you know, similar you lot know, and four letter words. Not anybody would recall y'all were worth listening to. |

| Look, I know yous don't want to be told "you can do information technology!" considering I was there once and I didn't desire to hear it either, but the fact was, there was no getting around it. Every possible degree plan required it. I was the kind of person who would literally become ill when I had to exercise oral reports of any kind in high school. As in vomiting, having to run out of the room kind of sick. Still, I had to do it in higher. It was one semester and I put it off as long as possible. What helped: one. Advisedly research instructors/professors to discover one who is tremendously sympathetic. It makes a huge difference. 2. Recollect that many of your classmates are feeling the same way and chances are, while you are speaking, they are sitting their with their stomachs churning, worrying most their own oral communication more than than anything else. 3. If possible, take the grade with someone yous know. I was lucky enough to be attending the same schoolhouse every bit my wife and we took speech communication together. It was so much easier, having a friendly face in the audition! 4. OVER ready for the speeches by rehearsing. This manner, if fretfulness kick in too badly you all the same get on auto pilot and tin get information technology done... your brain kind of takes over for you! 5. Cull speech topics that yous are passionate about, if you lot are given elbowroom to do so. As a substance abuse advisor, yous may have to lead psycho-educational groups on diverse subjects, like parenting skills, motivational interviewing, and other subjects. If you can't do this, with conviction, and competently, an employer is wasting money hiring you lot. A substance abuse counselor needs to be able to atomic number 82 groups.
